I was naïve about making money on YouTube until a couple of years ago but once I discovered the tips of the trade, I realised how easy it was make extra money. The easy thing is making it pay, the hard thing is coming up with a video concept in the first place! Nowadays, it seems that you can’t turn on the TV without hearing about another YouTube video going viral and getting millions of views. Cute cats, smiling dogs, people falling over, stunts, jokes, laughing babies… Those videos that go viral earn the person who uploaded the video tens of thousands, even hundreds of thousands of pounds.
Before you start chasing the cat around and trying to make it do funny things, there are a number of other little ideas for popular videos. I have quite a few friends who are making good money from Youtube videos and I am sure they wont mind me sharing their ideas. One friend is a gym instructor and he makes workout videos with tips and coaching, my other friend does product reviews. Another makes “how to draw” videos. All three are making in between £20 and £100 per month. Once the videos are up and running you do not need to do anything else! Just keep making more videos which in turn pulls in more revenue! Whilst you think of ideas for the next viral video, here is my step by step guide to making money on Youtube.
Step by Step guide
Step 1) Set up and build your YouTube channel – Your channel is your personal space. Add keywords to help people find your channel and try and go for a short punchy username so people can remember it easily.
Step 2) Add content – Your videos should be well made and not too long. Tag your videos with keywords that describe the content and create a description that will grab people’s attention.
Step 3) Find viewers – You need to share your videos on social media, forums and blogs to get people to view it. Reply to comments and encourage people to subscribe to your channel as well as watching your videos.
Step 4) Monetize – you need to monetize your videos which allows YouTube to place ads in your video. This also means that you acknowledge that there is no copyrighted material in your video.
You can monetize a video as soon as it uploads by clicking the Monetization tab and checking the “Monetize with Ads” box.
To monetize a video after it has been uploaded, open your Video Manager and click the “$” sign next to the video that you want to monetize. Check the “Monetize with Ads” box.
Step 5) Set up Google Ad Sense – You will find this on the AdSense website. It is free to sign up and you will need either PayPal or a bank account and a valid address. You gain money by people clicking on the advert on your video and a smaller amount is paid per view but this is significantly smaller, however it does add up over time.
